Chapters: African-American Literature, Black Existentialism, Elizabeth Alexander, African American Studies, Black Sermonic Tradition, Religion in Black America, African American National Biography Project, Double Consciousness. Excerpt: African-American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. The genre traces its origins to the works of such late 18th century writers as Phillis Wheatley and Olaudah Equiano , reaching early high points with slave narratives and the Harlem Renaissance , and continuing today with authors such as Toni Morrison , Maya Angelou and Walter Mosley being ranked among the top writers in the United States. Among the themes and issues explored in African American literature are the role of African Americans within the larger American society, African-American culture, racism , slavery , and equality . African American writing has also tended to incorporate within itself oral forms such as spirituals , sermons, gospel music , blues and rap . As African Americans' place in American society has changed over the centuries, so, too, have the focus of African American literature. Before the American Civil War , African American literature primarily focused on the issue of slavery , as indicated by the subgenre of slave narratives . At the turn of the 20th century, books by authors such as W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington debated whether to confront or appease racist attitudes in the United States. During the American Civil Rights movement , authors such as Richard Wright and Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about issues of racial segregation and black nationalism . Today, African American literature has become accepted as an integral part of American literature , with books such as Roots: The Saga of an |

Excerpt: Aesop (also spelled Æsop or Esop , from the Greek Aispos ) (ca. 620-564 BC), known for the genre of fables ascribed to him, was by tradition born a slave () and was a contemporary of Croesus and Solon in the mid-sixth century BC in ancient Greece .Early sources The earliest sources of Aesop's life date from long after his death, and most biographical material about him is almost certainly mythical. His name was associated with a huge number of fables, most of which probably were composed not by the historical figure of Aesop but by later authors. The earliest Greek sources (including Aristotle ) indicate that Aesop was born in Thrace at a site on the Black Sea coast which would later become the city Mesambria ; a number of later writers from the Roman imperial period (including Phaedrus , who adapted the fables into Latin), say that he was born in Phrygia . The third-century B.C. poet Callimachus called him "Aesop of Sardis ," and the later writer Maximus of Tyre called him "the sage of Lydia ". Aristotle is also our earliest source (followed by Herodotus ) for the information that Aesop was a slave in Samos and that his masters were first a man named Xanthus and then a man named Iadmon; that he must eventually have been freed, because he argued as an advocate for a wealthy Samian; and that he met his end in the city of Delphi . Plutarch tells us that Aesop had come to Delphi on a diplomatic mission from King Croesus of Lydia , that he insulted the Delphians, was sentenced to death on a trumped-up charge of temple theft, and was thrown from a cliff; the Delphians |

Excerpt: F. arcticaF. cirrhataF. corniculataFor prehistoric species, see article text. Puffins are any of three small species of auk (or alcids) in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak in the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the Tufted Puffin and Horned Puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the best known species, the iconic Atlantic Puffin, is found in the North Atlantic Ocean. Iceland is the home to most of the Atlantic Puffins with about 10 million individuals. The largest single puffin colony in the world is in Westmann Isles, islands that belong to Iceland. In 2009, scientists estimated the number of nests to be 1.1 million, and number of individuals there is estimated to be up to 4.0 millions. All puffin species have predominantly black or black and white plumage, a stocky build, and bear large beaks. They shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute) in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface. The Rhinoceros Auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) has sometimes been included in the genus Fratercula, and some authors place the Tufted Puffin in the genus Lunda. The puffins and the Rhinoc... More: |

Excerpt: Catopsila crocale Adult FemaleThe Common Emigrant or Lemon Emigrant (Catopsilia pomona) is a medium sized pierid butterfly found in Asia and parts of Australia. The species gets its name from its habit of migration. Some early authors considered them as two distinct species Catopsilia crocale and Catopsilia pomona. Male on Jatropha panduraefolia in Kolkata, West Bengal, India The species has pale and dark morphs in Australia. The form crocale has the antennae black and the form pomona has the antennae pinkish or red. The development of these forms has been linked to photoperiod and temperature during growth. The following description is from Bingham for Catopsilia crocale: The upperside of the male is chalky-white, sometimes with a more or less broad and clearly defined basal sulphur-yellow area on both fore and hind wings; this sulphur-yellow colour is at times diffused over the whole surface of the wings, though generally it becomes paler towards the terminal margins. For the fore wing, the whole, or sometimes only the apical half, of the costa narrowly black, this color widened out irregularly at the apex; termen widely black at the apex, the colour narrowed posteriorly. This border in some specimens almost reaches the tornus, in others terminates above vein 4; occasionally it is continued posteriorly by a series of block dots at the apices of the veins. Hind wing: generally uniform, unmarked, some specimens bear minute black dots at the apices of the veins. Male Female in Kolkata, West Bengal, IndiaOn the underside the groundcolo... More: |

Cryptography Books $14.14 Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Books on Cryptography. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Books on cryptography have been published sporadically and with highly variable quality for a long time. This is despite the tempting, though superficial, paradox that secrecy is of the essence in sending confidential messages see Kerckhoffs' principle. In contrast, the revolution in cryptography and secure communications of the last 25 years is well covered in the available literature. An early example of a book about cryptography was a Roman work, now lost and known only by references. Many early cryptographic works were esoteric, mystical, and/or reputation-promoting; cryptography being mysterious, there was much opportunity for such things. At least one work by Trithemius was banned by the Catholic Church and put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum as being about black magic or witchcraft. Many writers claimed to have invented unbreakable ciphers. None were, though it sometimes took a long while to establish this. In the 19th century, the general standard improved somewhat (eg, works by Auguste Kerckhoffs, Friedrich Kasiski, and Étienne Bazeries). Colonel Parker Hitt and William Friedman in the early 20th century also wrote books on cryptography. These authors, and others, mostly abandoned any mystical or magical tone. With the invention of radio, much of military communications went wireless, allowing the possibility of enemy interception much more readily than tapping into a landline. This increased the need to protect communications. By the end of World War I, cryptography and its literature began to be officially limited. One exception was The American Black Chamber by Herbert Yardley, which gave some insight into American cryptologic success stories, including the Zimmermann telegram |

After the release of the core book (subsequently referred to as the "Spycraft Espionage Handbook") in 2002, multiple print supplements were released in the following years for both lines. Each of these books sported highly distinctive cover art by artist Veronica V. Jones. A new edition of the rules, Spycraft 2.0, was released in August 2005. Shortly afterwards, economic issues forced AEG to cull Spycraft from its product range. As a result, early in 2006 the core authors of the 2nd editionAlex Flagg, Scott Gearin and Patrick Kapera (who also co-authored Spycraft 1.0). -- formed Crafty Games to continue the line under licence, predominantly through PDF file releases supported by strategic print releases. Germanic Mysticism $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Thule Society, Ariosophy, Black Sun, Guido Von List, Julleuchter, Esoteric Nazism, Volkstum, Völkisch Movement, Tyr, Stephen Flowers, Jörg Lanz Von Liebenfels, Mathilde Ludendorff, Wotanism, Nigel Pennick, Tannenbergbund, Rudolf John Gorsleben, Friedrich Wannieck, Landig Group, German Faith Movement, Peryt Shou, Philipp Stauff, Artgemeinschaft, Wilfried Daim. Excerpt: Armanism and Ariosophy are the names of ideological systems of an esoteric nature, pioneered by Guido von List and Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels respectively, in Austria between 1890 and 1930. List also used the name Wotanism , whereas Lanz also used the names Theozoology and Ario-Christianity . The two authors inspired numerous others and a variety of organizations in Germany and Austria of that time. This article follows the historian Goodrick-Clarke in summarizing these developments under the term Ariosophy , although this broader use of the word is retrospective and was not generally current among the esotericists themselves. They were part of a general occult revival in Austria and Germany of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, loosely inspired by historical Germanic paganism and traditional concepts of occultism , and related to German romanticism . The connection of this Germanic mysticism with historical Germanic culture, though tenuous, is evident in the mystics' fascination with runes , in the form of List's Armanen runes .Overview Ideology regarding the Aryan race (in the sense of Indo-Europeans , though with Germanic peoples being viewed as their purest representatives), runic symbols, the swastika , and occultism are important elements in Ariosophy. From around 1900 onwards, these ariosophic ideas (together with, and influenced by, Theosophy ) contributed significantly to an occult |

Medieval Geographers $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Bavarian Geographer (Latin: ) is a conventional name given by Jan Potocki in 1796 to the author of an anonymous medieval document Descriptio civitatum et regionum ad septentrionalem plagam Danubii ("Description of Cities and Lands North of the Danube"). The short document was discovered in 1772 in the Bavarian State Library, Munich by Louis XV's ambassador to the Saxon court, Comte Louis-Gabriel Du Buat-Nançay. It had been acquired by the Wittelsbachs with the collection of the antiquarian Hermann Schädel (1410-85) in 1571. The document was much discussed in the early 19th-century historiography, notably by Nikolai Karamzin and Joachim Lelewel. The document contains a list of the tribes in Central-Eastern Europe east of the Elbe and north of the Danube to the Wolga rivers to the Black and Caspian Sea (most of them of Slavonic origin, with Ruzzi, and others such as Vulgarii, etc). Absent on the list are Polans, Pomeranians and Masovians, tribes first of whom are believed to settle along the shores of the Warta river during the 8th century.. There is also some information about the number of strongholds (civitates) possessed by some of the tribes and other information.I.e. Croats (White Croatia have 150 towns. Henryk owmiaski demonstrated that the list consists of two parts, which may be datable to different periods and attributed to distinct authors. The provenance of the document is disputed. Although early commentators suggested that it could have been compiled in Regensburg, the list seems to have been taken from Codex Reginbertinus II, recorded in the 9th century in the library of the Reichenau Abbey and named after a local librarian. Based on these findings, Bischoff attributes it to a monk active at Reichenau from th... More: |

Organ Disorders: Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans $9.62 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans, Glomerulonephritis, Short Bowel Syndrome, Pancreatic Fistula, Fanconi Syndrome, Nephropathy. Excerpt: Balanitis xerotica obliterans (BXO) is a dermatological (skin) condition affecting the male genitalia. It was first described by Stuhmer in 1928, though earlier reports describe what may have been the same condition. BXO commonly occurs on the foreskin and glans penis . Atrophic white patches appear on the affected area, and commonly, a whitish ring of indurated (hardened) tissue usually forms near the tip that may prevent retraction. Epidemiology The true prevalence of BXO is controversial and unclear. One study calculated a rate of 0.6 % of boys are affected by their 15th birthdays. Another reported a rate of 0.07 %. However, a review noted that "with a high degree of suspicion and histologic examination, the condition will prove to be much more frequent than one generally believes." Another suggested that "more cases would be diagnosed during infancy if all dried foreskin were examined systematically." Another remarked that the condition "may be misdiagnosed or ignored in the young boy." Yet another commented that "its true incidence is not appreciated because most cases are cured by circumcision , and unfortunately many surgeons still fail to send their circumcision specimens for histology." Another remarked that the "extent of asymptomatic disease in this series would suggest the true prevalence of LS in men might be much higher than published work suggests." According to some authors, the disease most frequently affects middle-aged men. However, a large study reported that the age distribution was similar from 2 to 90 years of age, except for men in their twenties, who were at twice the risk. The same study found that black and |

Roman Gladiators $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Spartacus (Greek: ; Latin: ) (c. 10971 BC) was the most notable leader of the slaves in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Little is known about Spartacus beyond the events of the war, and surviving historical accounts are sometimes contradictory and may not always be reliable. Spartacus' struggle, often seen as oppressed people fighting for their freedom against a slave-owning aristocracy, has found new meaning for modern writers since the 19th century. The rebellion of Spartacus has proven inspirational to many modern literary and political writers, making Spartacus a folk hero among cultures both ancient and modern. Thracian tribes, including the Maedi. The ancient sources agree that Spartacus was a Thracian. Plutarch describes him as "a Thracian of Nomadic stock," but "more Hellenic than Thracian" when referring to his character. Appian says he was "a Thracian by birth, who had once served as a soldier with the Romans, but had since been a prisoner and sold for a Gladiator". Florus (2.8.8) described him as one "who from Thracian mercenary, had become a Roman soldier, of a soldier a deserter and robber, and afterwards, from consideration of his strength, a gladiator". Some authors refer to the Thracian tribe of the Maedi, which in historic times occupied the area on the southwestern fringes of Thrace (present-day north-eastern Greece, south-western Bulgaria). Plutarch also writes that Spartacus's wife, a prophetess of the same tribe, was enslaved with him.
