Professor Pattee in his "History of American Literature since 1870" says: "No wonder that the book reviewer of Harper's Magazine for May, 1870, with nothing better before him than 'Miss Van Kortland,' Anonymous; 'Hedged In,' by Miss Phelps; and 'Askaros Kassis,' by De Leon, should have begun his review,' We are so weary of depending on England, France, and Germany for fiction and so hungry for some genuine American romance, that we are not inclined to read very critically the three characteristic American novels which lie on our table.'" Poe, Irving, Cooper, and Hawthorne had passed; Mark Twain had just begun; the nearest that How- ells had come to fiction was in the book, "No Love Lost; a Romance of Travel," really a longpoem in hexameters, published in 1868. Bret Harte's first book of fiction, "The Luck of Roaring Camp, and Other Sketches," came in 1870. It is easy to see why Professor Pattee began his study of modern American literature with that year, for it marked a dividing line between the old and the new, and Scribner's Monthly, born in 1870, did a goodly share toward helping on the renaissance. The plain people in America were only just beginning to find out that they could write. Cable — William Dean Howells When Scribner's Monthly began, in 1870, American literature, except for that furnished by the group of men writing in or near Boston, was at a low ebb, and even in Boston very little fiction was being produced. Great fiction writers had been living and writing in England, Dickens, Thackeray, Wilkie Collins, George Eliot, Charles

From the Publisher:Amanda and Marian Laton are identical twins but they are as different as night and day. Amanda is beautiful but nasty, and Marian is nice but plain -- purposely so to avoid provoking her spiteful twin's jealousy. When their wealthy father suddenly dies, the two gently reared New England heiresses are sent to live with their aunt on a sprawling Texas ranch. There the twins meet Chad Kinkaid, the cowboy son of a neighboring rancher. Marian is fascinated by Chad's rugged good looks and his sheer masculinity, but she knows that like every other man she and her twin have met, he will pursue Amanda, not her. Chad is indeed beguiled by Amanda's beauty, but soon he begins to see beyond Marian's carefully constructed dowdy fa ade. Unlike the tame gentlemen back East, after witnessing Marian's taste for adventure, her sense of humor and bravery in the face of danger, Chad finds himself wanting her. Between 1929 and 1988, American mystery writer Mignon Good Eberhart wrote fifty-nine mystery novels, at least as many short stories, and served a term as president and Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America. This study of Eberhart's life and work considers the influence of her childhood in Nebraska, her marriage and frequent travels, and her various professional and personal contacts in Chicago and on the East Coast. Eberhart's friendships with well-known literary figures, including mystery and romance authors, provide a fascinating glimpse into the social matrix of a bygone publishing world. Eberhart's experiences with Hollywood and Broadway show how the mystery genre, and writer, were transformed in an alternate medium. Leading women's magazines of the day also sought Eberhart's talent and inevitably transformed her writing. Eberhart's novels and correspondence provide insight into the social mores of her day, in particular about women's friendships, repressed sexuality, and closeted homosexuality. Those interested in cultural studies, women's studies, and twentieth-century popular literature will find this book valuable. Rick Cypert is a professor of English at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

This book is an autobiography of the author, Catherine Puro, written as poems. It is about her experiences from childhood to adulthood, her true belief in God, and most of all, it is about her first and only love named William Shane. Catherine's poems guide us to her experiences in college and her love for math and science. Also, her poems show her talent for analytical writing. Furthermore, her poems about love and marriage show us her romantic side and her love for romance novels (and her favorite authors, such as Johanna Lindsey, Julie Garwood, and Shannon Drake). Her love for historical entities like Charlemagne and knights, with their shining armor, shows her love for reading history. Catherine read her first book, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, when she was only twelve. Her favorite character in Wuthering Heights is Catherine and Edgar's daughter, also named Catherine, because she knows the true meaning of love.
